The Bulleid Booster, or the original Class 70 as some know them, are electric locomotives built by the SR during the second world war. With 6 traction motors and 1400hp, these powerful locomotives soon proved their worth with 1000t freight trains. The "Bulleid Booster" name comes from the clever system fitted to avoid the 'gapping' issue, by which locomotives would drop in and out of power over the gaps in the SR third rail system and get marooned off the power, mainly over points and crossings. The booster system was a motor-generator and flywheel that was placed between the 3rd rail traction current and the traction motor and meant when the locomotive came off the electrical supply, the flywheel would keep turning and generate current for the traction motors, leading to a minimal loss of power when the locomotives were “off the juice”.

At the checkout choose one of our shipping option upgrades, either 'Express' Tracked 24 at £1.99 or 'Special Delivery' Next Day at £4.99. The upgraded postage options also jump the long despatch queue too, so they are shipped at the earliest possible opportunity. Please note that 'Express' and 'Special' upgrades are not available for orders with a total value under £20.
