The BR Standard 5MT was one of the 'Standard' designs of steam locomotive built by British Railways, introduced to replace ageing big four designs in the 1950's. Designed by Robert Riddles, the 5MT was essentially a development of the Stanier Black 5 - itself being a very successful design to start with - and this lead to the engines being trouble free and well liked by crews. 172 were built between 1951 and 1957 and were split between the London Midland, Scottish, Southern and Eastern regions of British Railways. Withdrawls started in 1964 with a few engines withdrawn that year being of 1957 build, meaning they were only 7 years old! Five have reached preservation and all have seen service in the 21st century. 

73026, as represented here, was built in 1951 at Derby and allocated to the Midland Region. It was withdrawn and scrapped in 1967. The lined Green livery it is modelled in here was painted on locomotives designated mainly for passenger duties: this meant they spent most of their time hauling passenger trains and any British Railways 1950-1960's coaches (BR Maroon, Crimson & Cream, etc) are appropriate to run with this model.

This Graham Farish BR Standard Class 5MT now features a Next18 DCC decoder interface and pre-fitted speaker: a factory fitted DCC Sound Fitted model was produced at the same time as this DCC ready version, if we retain any stock of that version it will be shown at the bottom of this page. 

A powerful coreless motor provides drive to the driving wheels and each driving wheel is fitted with separate metal bearings whilst a pair of traction tyres are fitted to the rear driving wheels to aid traction. Electrical pick-up comes via all six driving wheels and all six tender wheels ensuring this model runs smoothly, especially over insulfrog points.
