In keeping with its predecessor the Class 24, the Class 25 was also known as the "Sulzer Type 2" and 327 of these locomotives were built in the 60s. Designed primarily for freight traffic, many were also fitted with boilers for use on passenger services, particularly noted in the summer on trains to Aberystwyth. They were graced with the nicknames "Rats" by railfans due to their perceived commonality and "Spluts" by drivers due to their breakdown swansong.
